The unique Reddam House philosophy and our formula for success are based to a large degree on the quality and depth of our curricula, cultural and sporting activities and especially our teaching staff. Reddam House Durbanville, stemmed from the notion to join forces with a pioneering school in the area, Chesterhouse School, an institution already part of the Reddam House family of international schools.
The decision to restructure Chesterhouse School as a Reddam House was based on the desire to achieve the most outstanding educational institution in Cape Town.
Reddam House Durbanville caters for children from 1 year old to Grade 12. The school will comprise two campuses, the Chesterhouse campus that will house the Early Learning School as well as the Junior and Senior Preparatory School; and the Clara Anna Fontein campus, currently under construction, will become the College for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12.
Clara Anna Fontein, only a 20 min drive from the Cape Town CBD, is an exclusive lifestyle estate boasting contemporary residential spaces as well as expanses of lush open areas, a private dam, protected wetlands and a private game reserve. Clara Anna Fontein offers an enviable and much sought-after lifestyle.
The development of the Clara Anna Fontein campus, which is adjacent to the Chesterhouse campus, will maximise the potential of the school. This campus will boast the following state of the art facilities, an astro turf, a swimming pool and change rooms, tennis and netball courts, two sports fields, a 400m athletics and events track or alternatively a soccer field as well as an auditorium and dining room. A Sixth Form Centre, also to be constructed at the College campus, will be for post matric A-level students. This will be a comfortable and familiar space for social recreation but will also serve as an examination and study area when needed. The Chesterhouse campus will undergo general upgrades including one already in place; a canteen managed by a local food group Kauai, for healthier lunchtime meals.
To continuously obtain outstanding academic achievements is a vision both Chesterhouse and Reddam House have pursued with full vigor, this makes the partnership a natural and comfortable alignment. Teachers and students will benefit from minor disruptions in the tuition structure, as the Cambridge curriculum will continue to be applied at Reddam House Durbanville. This internationally acclaimed curriculum offers the best preparation for students, for tertiary education, for the workplace, for individual achievement, success and most importantly for life.
The Reddam House teaching philosophy will be applied to amplify the students’ educational experience. Students can expect outstanding teaching staff; new timetables to further support academic achievement, an enhanced curriculum as well as more focused training and deeper learning.
While academics remain at the forefront of education, the Reddam House model is dynamic, relevant and powerful, seeking to nurture the unique individuality, talent and self-assurance of each student, equipping them with various skills and self-confidence that will contribute to self actualisation. Students will be encouraged to recognise and develop their skills and talents through, sport, performing and creative arts, drama, dance, music and public speaking – all of which form an integral part of the curriculum and daily school timetable. Reddam House takes a holistic and full rounded educational approach to cultivate equal strengths in all aspects.
“At both Reddam House and Chesterhouse we believe that each child is special, unique and different in their own way and as schools we should allow them to realise their full value and individuality through the schooling process. Our slogan ‘We shall embrace our individuality’ is the message for every teacher and every student to embrace and become the fullest and most self confident at Reddam House Durbanville,” says Crawford

– Graeme Crawford
For those mistakenly inclined to brand this particular part of the glorious Helderberg `Sleepy Somerset West’, a powerful wind is stirring the educational arena at the foot of the majestic Hottentots Holland Mountains, with the imminent launch of Reddam House Somerset.
The first Reddam House was founded in the similarly mountain-backed suburb of Constantia, Cape Town, in 2000. Success has inspired Reddam House schools in Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Sydney, Australia – an expanding international suite of over 10 great schools - now including the magnificent Reddam House Berkshire in Wokingham UK and Fulham Preparatory School in London.
This astonishing rate of expansion has been possible because of the strength and consistency of founder Graeme Crawford’s educational principles and practices. Crawford has deconstructed the traditional public school system, examined the fitness of every part, and reassembled it - as a new, super-performing operation - equipping Toddlers to Grade 12 to face a global future with confidence.
Reddam House Somerset strongly reflects contemporary international trends in education, incorporating an Early Learning School (age 1 to age 6), a Junior Preparatory (Grades 1 - 3), Senior Preparatory (Grades 4 - 7), and College (Grades 8 - 12).
A co-educational, non-denominational, independent IEB school, Reddam House stimulates learning in a relaxed, self-disciplined environment.
It offers a unique, completely child and student-centered philosophy, allowing each individual to thrive and maximize her or his potential, while strongly encouraging individuality and self-confidence. Fundamental to the philosophy is the recruitment of the finest, hand-picked teachers. In addition, best-in-the-field specialists in dance, drama, art, music, computers, languages and sport provide full enrichment from the Early Learning School through to the College. Says Crawford: “Academically, our approach is to hand-pick the top teacher for every subject - the right teacher to inspire and motivate children - whether in the classroom, on the sports field or on stage.”
Reddam House regards the life skills of self-confidence, leadership and public speaking as paramount. So drama is an integral part of the curriculum for everybody; this helps the shyest children to grow in confidence, rather than simply boosting the confidence of already natural performers.
Needless to say, any institution with a South African and Australian pedigree can be expected to take sport very seriously. Reddam House students also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and perform in an ensemble. A strong emphasis on dance has led to some monumental dance productions.
All the Reddam House schools are co-educational, with a comtemporary uniform and a vibrant campus life. Community service forms an integral part of school life at Reddam House.
‘Excellence’ is a word that Graeme Crawford uses unashamedly.
Renowned for all-round academic, cultural and sporting excellence and nurturing unique individuality, talent and self-assurance - Reddam House inspires true excellence in education - equipping students to face a global future with pride and confidence.
